Bengaluru, NFAPost: In an attempt to safeguard the health and safety of its employees, Uber, last week, notified all staff across the country to work from home (WFH) and launched several measures to ensure all employees felt connected, supported and informed during this difficult phase of remote work.
Teams and business leaders at the company regularly share ways for employees to cope, build resilience and care for themselves and their families. There are weekly ‘All Hands,’ virtual meetings organised for leadership to apprise employees of the company’s future plans, along with guidelines of what is being done to help stakeholders reliant on the Uber platform.
The company is utilising multiple technology and communications platforms to be in constant touch with employees and support them in these times. From setting up a global response centre for employees where all their queries are answered within 24 hours to initiating virtual training for managers to help support their teams in such ambiguous times.
Activities like Desktop Yoga Sessions, live virtual guided yoga sessions to help employees stay calm, focused and feel connected while they WFH are organised on a weekly basis to ensure physical and mental wellness. They are also being encouraged to reach out and ask for professional help if they need it through Uber’s ‘Employee Assistance Program,’ that provides a number of services that are confidential and free for employees and their family members. These include confidential counseling with stress, grief, anxiety, or any concern they might have.
In an email to all Uber employees across the globe, Uber Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Bo Young Lee said COVID-19 has understandably triggered anxiety and an emotional rollercoaster for many of us.
“Working from home over a prolonged period brings its own unique challenges, whether you’re a caregiver or simply because we are all used to being around others during the work day. I’m writing to tell you that you are not alone. When you’re isolated it’s easy to lapse into silence or become overwhelmed. Stay connected with family and friends and if you’re struggling mentally, reach out to a mental health expert immediately,” said Uber Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Bo Young Lee.
Uber has always had flexible working policies, however, the decision to implement WFH for all employees is following the latest guidance from authorities and to help slow the spread of Covid-19 by practicing ‘social distancing.’ By reducing the number of people working in close proximity to each other for extended periods of time, Uber wants to help flatten the curve of community spread and enable the country’s health care systems to cope.
